What Our Intergenerational Program Looks Like in Action
Every month, our kindy children jump on the centre bus to visit the residents at Merriwa RAAFA. These mornings aren’t structured or rigid. They are built around the simple joy of playing together. The children pack up puzzles, games, playdough, and crafts, and sit down side-by-side with the residents to create and chat.

Why We Prioritise These Connections
While it looks like simple fun from the outside, we intentionally use these mornings to naturally support a child’s confidence and social development. Here is what we see happening every time they visit:
✓ Rich Communication Skills: Chatting with older adults encourages children to slow down, practice patience, and adapt their language. They get to listen to stories from a completely different generation, which naturally expands their vocabulary and listening skills.
✓ Growing Genuine Empathy: You can’t easily teach empathy from a textbook. But when a child naturally lowers their voice, gently hands over a playdough tool, or holds the hand of an older friend, kindness becomes an everyday instinct.
✓Building Strong Self-Esteem: The residents are the most patient, welcoming audience in the world. This kind of undivided attention gives young children a wonderful boost in confidence that helps them thrive socially.
A Two-Way Street of Joy
The best part about this program is that the joy flows both ways. Our children learn so much about the world, and at the same time, the residents get an injection of pure, happy energy.
Every single trip is unique. Sometimes it’s a quiet morning of puzzles. Other times, we celebrate huge milestones together. On a recent trip, our kids made cards and playdough cakes to sing Happy 100th Birthday to a lovely resident named Jean.
Cultivating a True Community Spirit
By stepping outside our walls and connecting with the generations before us, our children experience the true meaning of being part of a Tribe. Talia’s vision for Tribe Ridgewood goes beyond traditional childcare; it is about building lifelong foundations of empathy, respect, and deep belonging to the wider world.
